Go Sustainable
The roads in the Highlands of Scotland are not motorways and the extra traffic generated by visitors to the World Cup may cause extra congestion and pollute the environment.

Why not consider reducing the impact of your travel to and around Fort William during the World Cup?  The train and bus run directly to the centre of Fort William with travel times often comparable to travelling by car from most UK cities.

Once you arrive in Fort William, the local taxi services can transport you to your accommodation and the extensive shuttle bus service can transport you to and from the event.

Another exciting development is the new dedicated cycle path between Fort William and the World Cup venue. With this new route making it much easier and safer to travel to the event. Why not bring your bike, leave your car at your accommodation and explore the area on two wheels?

The World Cup has a dedicated Liftshare website.  Why not check and see if anyone else from your area is travelling to the event?  You could save money on your petrol costs and reduce the environmental impact of your journey. Go to Liftshare for more information.

Travel by Road within UK
Many fans will be travelling big distances for the chance to see the stars in action at the World Cup. If you are coming from anywhere in England or Wales, head for Scotland.
If you are travelling up the East side of the country (M1, A1) you are going to end up in Edinburgh. Then head for Perth and follow the A9 north as far as Dalwhinnie where you follow the A889 to Laggan, the A86 to Spean Bridge and then the A82 to Fort William.

Coming up the West side of the country (M6, M74) from the south, take the M8 through Glasgow and then the M898 over the Erskine Bridge to Dumbarton. Follow the A82 beside Loch Lomond to Crianlarich and Tyndrum before crossing Rannoch Moor and descending to the Atlantic coast and Fort William through the pass of Glencoe.

Remember there are no motorways north of Perth and Glasgow, so plan extra time for your journey. Please also note there may be roadworks on sections of the A82 and the A9, with traffic lights that may cause delays. At least the views are spectacular.

AA signs will be in place from the A82 at Ballachulish.

Coming from the North – you must know where Fort William is by now but if you are flying in to Inverness airport, take the A96 into Inverness and then follow the signs for Fort William and the A82. Pretty soon you will be travelling along the length of Loch Ness, complete with elusive monster, then Loch Oich and Loch Lochy – which all form part of the Caledonian Canal which links the Atlantic and the North Sea.

Travel by road from outside the UK
There are a number of ways of crossing the English Channel or the North Sea. The most convenient is with Superfast Ferries, from Zeebrugge in Belgium to Rosyth, just beside Edinburgh. It’s an incredibly relaxing 17 hour overnight crossing and you arrive under the awe-inspiring Forth Rail Bridge, with a short 2.5hr drive up to Fort William. www.superfast.com

A shorter crossing, from Amsterdam, lands in Newcastle, which is about 2 hours from Edinburgh up the A1. From Edinburgh follow the UK travel directions.

Further South, there are crossings to Hull and Harwich. In both cases you must head for the A1, North to Edinburgh.

The shortest and most frequent crossings are by ferry or tunnel from Calais or Dieppe to Dover, Newhaven or Folkstone. This gives you the longest drive, up through most of mainland UK. Head for the M20, then go north on the M25, heading towards the M1, then A1 (East Coast route) or turn off the M1 onto the M6 and then M74 (West Coast route).

Cycling in Fort William
Give your car a rest and make it a cycling trip in Fort William.  There is a network of cycleways in the town and, for the first time this year, it is intended that there will be a dedicated cycleway beside the A82, from Fort William to Torlundy, ready for the World Cup. From Torlundy there is a quiet road, closed to most traffic, which takes you to the World Cup Village.

Travel Advice from the Northern Constabulary
Northern Constabulary welcomes competitors and spectators to the Lochaber Area. Please ensure that you pay particular attention to your belongings during this trip as thieves may be operating in the area. If you have cycle equipment which is not security marked we would encourage you to have this done and to secure everything well at night.

Please leave plenty time for your journey here and for your return and be considerate when driving. Parking has been provided and any permanent or temporary restriction will be rigorously enforced to ensure your safety and convenience.

Mountain biking in Scotland
As well as having the best mountain bike competitions in the world, Scotland also offers one of the best mountain bike playgrounds. It’s got fantastic natural terrain and a huge network of footpaths, drove roads and forest roads in some of Europe’s wildest and most spectacular locations. Together with an enlightened attitude to countryside access (you can go pretty much anywhere as long as you respect certain fundamental rules) it’s a great place to get on your bike.

The Forestry Commission’s mountain bike trail centres have a huge reputation and have contributed to Scotland’s “Global Superstar” status in the annual IMBA (International Mountain Bike Association) report.

Why not extend your visit to the World Cup and have some fun on these top trails.
